SAN FRANCISCO - Roberto Clememte drove in the first 2 Pirate runs. Rennie Stennett drove in the last two. However, 4 runs was not enough to offset HR's by Barry Bonds, Dave Kingman and Ed Goodson. Bob Miller's error, one of two Buc errors led to an unearned run. The final, Giants 7, Pirates 4.
Overall, Clemente was 1-4 and is now 70 hits away from 3,000.
Clemente scored the game's 1st run in the 1st when his ground out scored Dave Cash. In the 2nd, Roberto tripled in Manny Sanguillen for his 19th RBI. Rennie Stennett drove in Jose Pagan and Gene Alley with a pinch hit triple. Stennett now has 14 RBI's.
Winner Juan Marichal (2-8) pitched a complete game. Bob Johnson (0-3) took the loss. The Bucs are still in 2nd place, 5 GB the Mets, who lost to the Braves, 6-1.
Saturday, Steve Blass (6-1) faces Sam McDowell (6-3).

MONTREAL - Tim Foli's RBI single in the 6th broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Expos a 3-2 win over the Pirates.
Roberto Clemente was 0-4 and is still 71 hits away from 3,000.
The Buccos scored 2nd when Nelson Briles drove in Richie Hebner, who led off the inning with a walk. The Expos quickly countered when Ron Fairly led off the bottom of the inning with a HR. Willie Stargell fired back with a 2 out HR, his 10th HR and 31st RBI of the year. However, the Expos got back to back hits from Ron Hunt and Boots Day. Hunt made it to 3rd on Richie Hebner's error and scored an unearned run on Bob Bailey's sac fly to tie the game at 2-2. The score stayed tied until Foli drove in Ken Singleton in the 6th.
Ernie McAnally (1-5) won his 1st game of the year. Briles (3-2) was the loser. The Bucs are still in 2nd place, now 4 GB the Mets, who were idle.
The Bucs head for a 10 game trip to the West Coast beginning Friday in San Francisco. Juan Marichal (1-8) vs Bob Johnson (0-2).

PITTSBURGH - Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen had at least 1 RBI in each game of the Memorial day DH, which the Pirates swept by scores of 7-3 and 4-2.
Roberto Clemente was 2-5 in Game 1 and scored 2 runs. He is now 71 hits away from 3,000. Clemente was a defensive replacement for Stargell in Game 2 as Gene Clines moved from RF to LF.
Down 3-1 in the 5th and with 2 out, Clines singled. Clemente walked. Clines scored on Stargell's single. Clemente scored on Sanguillen's single. Jose Pagan homered in the 6th. In the 7th, Clemente singled and scored on Stargell's 9th HR of the season.
Stargell and Sanguillen finished the day with 30 & 21 RBI's respectively. Ramon Hernandez (3-0) and Bob Moose (3-2) were the winning pitchers.
The Bucs are still in 2nd place, now 3.5 GB the Mets.
The Bucs play a makeup game vs the Expos on Wednesday. Nelson Briles (3-1) vs Ernie MacAnally (0-5). The Pirates head for a 10 game trip to the West Coast beginning Friday.

PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente led off the bottom of the 9th with a pinch hit walk, tied the game on Dave Cash's single. Then came Al Oliver's RBI single to win the game for the Pirates, 6-5 over the Phils
Clemente is still 73 hits away from 3,000.
With the Bucs leading 4-3 in the top of the 9th, Denny Doyle led off the inning with a single. He scored the tying run on Jackie Hernandez 's error. The Phils took a 5-4 lead when Greg Luzinski singled in Larry Bowa.
Clemente led off the 9th pinch hitting for Hernandez. Pinch hitter Gene Alley reached 1B on an error by Joe Hoerner, Cash's single scored Clemente from 2b. Gene Clines' single advanced the runners and set the table for Oliver's 2nd RBI of the game, Scoop now has 27 total.
Hoerner took the loss (0-2) Ramon Hernandez won (2-0).
The Bucs are still in 2nd place, 4 GB the Mets.
Monday's DH has Woodie Fryman v Luke Walker in G1, Ken Reynolds v Bob Moose in G2.

PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente scored the tying run in the 6th inning. But former Pirate farmhand Don Money greeted Dave Guisti by driving in Tommy Hutton in the 12th to beat the Pirates 2-1 and snap a 10 game losing streak.
Clemente is now 73 hits away from 3,000.
Starters Bill Champion and Bob Johnson fought a scoreless pitching duel until Willie Montanez led off the top of the 6th with his 3rd HR of the season.
The Bucs countered when Clemente led off the 6th with a single and scored on Manny Sanguillen's 18th RBI.
Guisti, who has been struggling this season, lost the game. He is now 1-4 with 3 blown saves. Bucky Brandon (2-1) won in relief. Chris Short earned his 1st save.
The Bucs are still in 2nd place, 5 GB the Mets.
Sunday has Dick Selma facing Steve Blass.

PITTSBURGH - The day off must have done Roberto Clemente a world of good. He was 4-5, scored twice and drove in a pivotal run in the Pirates' 6-4 decision over the Phils, who have now lost 10 in a row.
Clemente is now 74 hits away from 3,000.
Clemente doubled and scored an unearned run in the 1st when Don Money misplayed Jose Pagan's grounder to 3rd. Clemente also singled in the 2nd In the 4th, the Bucs broke a 2-2 tie when Clemente doubled and scored on Manny Sanguillen's RBI double. Clemente added another RBI in the 8th when he singled home Dave Cash. Clemente is now tied with Sanguillen with 17 RBI's.
Both teams had 4 errors. Losing pitcher Steve Carlton (5-5) gave up 5 runs, 4 earned. Nelson Briles (3-1) pitched a complete game win. He gave up 4 runs, only 1 was earned.
The Bucs are still in 2nd place, 4 GB the Mets.
Saturday has Bill Champion facing Bob Johnson.

ST.LOUIS - The Pirates surrendered a run in the 3rd to get a double play. It gave the Cards a lead they would never relinquish as the Cards stopped the Pirates winning streak at 9 games. Final, St. Louis 4, Pirates 2.
Roberto Clemente did not play. He is still 78 hits away from 3,000. Gene Clines started in RF and was 1-3.
Dave Cash and Al Oliver both went 2-4. Oliver drove in his 24th RBI of the season. Richie Hebner drove in his 17th. He took Gibson deep with his 6th HR of the year.
Bob Gibson won his first game of the season, pitching a complete game. He is now 1-5. Dock Ellis took the loss and is now 5-2. Bruce Kison pitched the final 2 innings.
Even with the 9-1 run. the Bucs are still in 2nd place, 5 GB the Mets.
The Pirates return home for a Memorial Day weekend series against the Phils. Game 1 Friday has Steve Carlton (5-4) facing Nellie Briles (2-1).

ST.LOUIS - The Pirates hammered home 5 runs in the top of the 14th inning to overtake the Cards 9-4.
Roberto Clemente was 3-8. He now needs 78 hits to reach 3,000.
The Bucs overcame a 2-0 hole when they tied the game in the 6th on Clemente's 2 run HR. It was his 3rd HR and 16th RBI of the season.
Pittsburgh took a 4-2 lead in the top of the 9th when Bob Mosse singled in Manny Sanguillen. In the bottom frame, Moose balked former Pirate Matty Alou to 2nd. Dave Guisti replaced Moose and gave up an RBI single to Bernie Carbo. Joe Torre tied the game when Luis Melendez forced Carbo at 2nd.
Torre's error in the 14th opened the gates for the Pirates, who scored 3 unearned runs. Clemente scored the 5th run of the 14th when he and Dave Cash scored on Al Oliver's single.
Bob Miller (2-1) won in relief. Guisti suffered his 3rd blown save. Dennis Higgins (0-2) took the loss.
Thursday's game will have Dock Ellis (5-1) facing Bob Gibson (0-5).

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates swept Montreal in a DH Sunday and swept their second home series.
The Pirates have now won 7 games in a row. The scores were 1-0 (Game 1) and 5-3 (Game 2).
Dave Cash scored the only run of Game 1 when he drove in Jackie Hernandez from 2B. Hernandez was picked off 2nd base but reached 3rd base on a throwing error by Expo starter Ernie McAnally.
Roberto Clemente was 0-3 in Game 1 and did not play in Game 2. He still needs 83 hits to reach 3,000. Clemente is hitting .313.
The Expos snapped the Pirates' 36 scoreless streak in Game 2 when Ron Hart doubled off starter Bob Johnson in the 1st inning and scored on Ron Fairly's single.
In the 5th, down 2-1 Al Oliver's 3rd HR of the year put the Bucs ahead.
The Pirates broke a 3-3 tie in the 8th when Bill Mazeroski drove in his 1st run of the year on a sac fly. Dave Guisti reached 1B on SS Hector Torres' error, scoring Gene Clines. Torres was in the game because Expos SS Tim Foli was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
Luke Walker (2-1) and Guisti (1-3) got the wins.
The Pirates are off Monday and will travel to St.Louis for 3 games. The Bucs are now in 2nd place, 18-12, 6 games behind New York.
