PITTSBURGH - Willie Stargell hit his 8th HR and Manny Sanguillen drove in 2 runs to lead the Bucs to an 11-0 rout of Montreal.
The win is the 5th in a row for the Pirates and their 3rd shutout in a row.
Stargell now has 30 RBI's to Sanguillen's 16.

Roberto Clemente led off the 7th with his only hit of the game but was stranded.  He is now just 83 hits away from 3,000.
Dock Ellis (5-1) won the game with 4 innings of relief help from Bruce Kison, now with 3 saves.  Carl Morton (1-4) took the loss.
Sunday's DH has Ernie McAnally v Luke Walker in Game 1. Game 2 has Steve Renko v Bob Johnson.

Friday, May 19th, 1972

PITTSBURGH - Willie Stargell was 3-4 with a homer, his 7th and 4 his RBI's lifted the Pirates to an 8-0 win vs Montreal. Stargell leads the Bucs with 24 RBI's.

Roberto Clemente was 2-4 with a run scored. He is now just 84 hits away from 3,000.
In the 6th, Clemente singled Vic Davalillo to 2B. Davalillo scored on Stargell's single to make it 3-0 Bucs.
In the 8th, Clemente doubled Davalillo to 3B. Davalillo and Clemente both scored on Stargell's double to make it 8-0 Pirates.
Bob Moose, the winner with a 2-2 record, threw a complete game, 4 hit shutout. Bill Stoneman (3-4) took the loss.
Saturday's game has Carl Morton (1-3) vs Dock Ellis (4-1).

CLEMENTE 2-4, 2 RBI
Wednesday, May 17th, 1972

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates offense bombarded Cardinal pitching en route to an 11-0 shutout behind the pitching of Steve Blass.

Roberto Clemente was 2-4 with 2 RBI's and is now just 86 hits away from 3,000.

Up 6-0, Clemente led off the 5th with a double and scored on Willie Stargell's double. Stargell has 20 RBI's.

In the 6th inning, with the Pirates up 9-0, Clemente's single drove in Dave Cash and Vic Davalillo. Clemente now has 13 RBI's and a .317 batting average.

Both Davalillo and Manny Sanguillen hit their 2nd HR of the season. 
Blass (4-1) pitched a complete game and got the win. Cards starter Reggie Cleveland (3-2) pitched 3.1 innings and took the loss.  
The Pirates are off Thursday. They host a 4 game weekend series against the Expos. Friday's matchup is Bill Stoneman (3-3) vs Bob Moose (1-2).

HEBNER 3R HR POWERS PIRATES PAST CARDS 4-3 CLEMENTE 1-3
Tuesday, May 16th, 1972

PITTSBURGH - Richie Hebner's 3 run HR with 2 outs was enough to hold off the Cardinals, 4-1.
Roberto Clemente singled in the 3rd inning but was forced out at 2nd to end the inning.
Clemente is now just 88 hits away from 3,000.

The Cards scored a run in the 1st inning on Joe Torre's triple. The Pirates countered when Willie Stargell doubled home Dave Cash to tie the game. Hebner's blast drove in Stargell and Al Oliver to make it 4-1.

The Cards made it 4-2 when Dwain Anderson moved to second when Rick Wise reached 1st on Hebner's error. Lou Brock singled Anderson home with an unearned run. St.Louis pulled to within a run in the 9th when Ted Sizemore singled home Joe Hague.
Luke Walker (1-1) got the win. Dave Guisti pitched 3 innings to earn his 2nd save. Rick Wise (3-3) pitched a complete game but took the loss.
 
Wednesday's matchup is Reggie Cleveland (2-2) vs Steve Blass (3-1).

Monday, May 15th, 1972

PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente got only 1 hit in the game but he made it count. His 3 run HR in the 7th broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Bucs a 4-1 win over St.Louis.

Clemente is now just 89 hits away from 3,000.

The Cards scored a run in the 3rd when Ed Crosby singled in Lou Brock with 2 outs. The Pirates tied it in the 5th when Dock Ellis drove in Richie Hebner, who led off the inning with a double.

Dave Cash led off the 7th with a single. Vic Davalillo reached on an error by 3B Joe Torre. Both scored on Clemente's HR.

Dock Ellis (4-1) got the complete game win. Bob Gibson (0-5) also pitched a complete game but took the loss.
 
Tuesday's match up is Rick Wise (2-3) vs Luke Walker (0-1)

ASTROS SCORE 7 IN 2 INN
HOLD OFF PIRATES 7-6.
Sunday, May 14th, 1972

HOUSTON - The Astros knocked out Nellie Briles in the 2nd with a 4 run 2nd inning and held on to sneak by the Pirates 7-6.

Roberto Clemente pinch hit for Dave Guisti and led off the 9th with a single but was stranded. He is now 90 base hits away from 3,000. Clemente's average is .303.

RBI's by Al Oliver and Richie Hebner gave the Bucs a 2 run lead in the 1st. However, the Astros took the lead in the bottom of the 1st on a 3 run HR by Cesar Cedeno and a back to back solo shot by Bob Watson.

The Bucs fought back when Vic Davalillo and Al Oliver got back to back hits. Willie Stargell singled home Davalillo. Richie Hebner's sac fly drove in Oliver to make the score 7-4 Houston.

The Pirates came to within a run in the 8th when Stargell hit a 2 run shot, his 6th off of Don Wilson. Jim Ray got his 3rd save in 3 days when he held the Bucs scoreless in the 9th with 2 runners on.
Wilson (2-2) got the win. Briles (1-2) took the loss.
 
The Pirates return home with a 3 game series with St. Louis. Monday's game has Dock Ellis (3-1) vs Bob Gibson (0-4).
Pittsburgh is 11-12, tied for 4th place with the Cubs. Both are 5.5 GB New York.

CLEMENTE TRIPLES 2 RBIS IN 12TH 
PIRATES BEAT HOUSTON 6-1, NOW 11-11 
Saturday, May 13th, 1972 
 
HOUSTON - The Pirates and Astros battled with a 1-1 tie until the Bucs went crazy in the top of the 12th. 
RBI's by Roberto Clemente, Al Oliver and Manny Sanguillen gave the Pirates a 5 run 12th and a 6-1 victory over the Astros. 
 
Clemente's 2 run triple in the 12th was his only hit of the game was 0-4 and is now 91 base hits away from 3,000. 
 
Bob Moose and Ken Forsch had a scoreless duel until the top of the 5th. Gene Alley led off with a single and was driven home by Al Oliver. The Bucs held the tenuous llead until Jim Wynn tied the game with a leadoff HR in the 7th. Both Moose and Forsch pitched 11th innings. 
 
PH Vic Davailiio led off the top of the 12th with a single and took second on Jim Wynn's error. Gene Clines was hit by a pitch. Davalillo scored when Doug Rader misplayed Dave Cash's sac bunt to 3B. Oliver singled to score Clines. Clemente's triple scored both Cash and Oliver. Clemente scored on Sanguillen's single. 
 
Blass (1-2) got the win. Bob Miller got his 2st save. Fred Gladding (0-1) took the loss. 
 
Sunday's game has Nelson Briles (1-1) vs Don Wilson (1-2).

2 RUNS IN 9TH BREAK TIE
PIRATES BEAT HOUSTON 4-2
Friday, May 12h, 1972

HOUSTON - Down by 2 runs, the Pirates rallied to tie the game in the 7th and score 2 runs in the 9th to defeat the Astros 4-2.

Roberto Clemente was 0-4 and is still 92 base hits away from 3,000.

Richie Hebner lead off the 7th with a solo HR, his 4th.  Vic Davalillo, pinch hitting for Gene Alley, doubled in Manny Sanguillen to tie the game.
The Pirates went ahead in the 9th when pinch hitter Milt May singled in Manny Sanguillen. Astro reliever Jim Ray's wild pitch scored Bob Robertson from third with the insurance run. Bob Miller got Doug Rader to ground into a DP to end the game.
Houston's Lee May hit a solo homer, his 4th off of starter Steve Blass.
Blass (3-1) got the win. Bob Miller got his 1st save. Larry Dierker (2-2) took the loss.
 
Saturday's game 2 at the Astrodome has Bob Moose vs Ken Forsch.

OLIVER, ROBERTSON HR
BUT PIRATES LOSE 8-4
Wednesday, May 10th, 1972

ATLANTA - Phil Niekro pitched a complete game victory while Bill Virdon went through 5 Pirate pitchers in the Bucs' 8-4 loss to the Braves.

Roberto Clemente was 3-4, pulling within 92 base hits of 3,000.

Clemente singled with 2 outs in the 1st inning. He singled in the 6th after Al Oliver's 2 run HR and doubled in the 8th. Clemente was standed each time.

In the 7th, Dave Guisti had Earl Williams picked off at 1st. But his throwing error opened the door for 3 runs to score. Bob Robertson hit a solo HR in the top of the 9th to make the score 8-4.

Niekro (4-3) got the win. Bob Johnson (0-2) pitched just 1.2 innings and took the loss.
 
The Pirates head to Houston for a weekend series. Friday, it's Steve Blass (2-1) vs Larry Dierker (2-1).

PIRATES 5, BRAVES 2
Tuesday, May 9th, 1972

ATLANTA - Dave Cash drove in 2 runs, 1 with a HR and was 3-5, leading the Pirates to a 5-2 win over Atlanta.
Roberto Clemente was 1-5 with 1 RBI, pulling within 95 base hits of 3,000.

Clemente's single drove in Cash for the 1st Pirates run. Clemente was then singled home by Richie Hebner to make it 2-0 in the top of the 1st. In the third, Willie Stargell hit his 5th HR of the year with a solo shot to put the Bucs ahead 3-1. Stargell leads the Bucs with 15 RBIs. Clemente now has 6.

Cash hit a 2 out solo HR in the 4th to double the score at 4-2. His double in the 8th drove in Bob Robertson to make it 5-2 Bucs. Cash now has 3 RBIs. Hebner has nine.

Bruce Kison retired the side in the 8th and 9th innings to record his 2nd save.

Dock Ellis (3-1) got the win. Tom Kelley (1-3) took the loss.
 
Tomorrow, the Pirates will play game 2 with Atlanta. Bob Johnson (0-1) vs knuckleballer Phil Niekro (3-3).
