CINCINNATI - The Pirates got 4 runs in the 7th and held off a 2 run Reds rally to squeak by Cincinnati 9-6.
Roberto Clemente was 3-5 with 2 RBIs, pulling within 96 base hits of 3,000.
Clemente's single in the 1st drove in Rennie Stennett with an unearned run. Stennett reached 1st on an error by 2B Joe Morgan.
Morgan rebounded with a 2 run homer in the 3rd, in which the Reds took a 4-3 lead. Willie Stargell tied the game with a solo homer in the 6th.
Pittsburgh rallied when Stennett and Al Oliver got 2 out singles. Clemente singled home Stennett. Stargell followed with a 3 run homer, his 2nd of the game. The Bucs held off another Reds rally when Bobby Tolan and Cesar Geronimo hit solo homers to make it 8-4, Pirates. Clemente got a run back when he doubled in the top of the 9th and scored on Richie Hebner's single.
Nelson Briles (2-0) got the win. Jack Billingham (0-5) took the loss.
The Pirates will now move to Atlanta for a 2 game series. Game 1 on Tuesday features Dock Ellis (2-1) vs Tom Kelley (1-2).

CLEMENTE GETS HIT 2,900

CINCINNATI - Roberto Clemente got his 2,900th career hit when he led off the 3rd inning with a single in the Pirates' 8-1 rout of the Reds.
Clemente was 2-5 in the game and now needs just 99 base hits to reach 3,000 hits.
Leading the Reds 2-0, Clemente's lead off single in the 3rd was followed by singles by Willie Stargell and Richie Hebner. Clemente and Stargell scored on Manny Sanguillen's double. Sangy now has 11 RBI's. The Pirates then led 7-0.
Clemente got his 2nd hit of the game with a lead off single in the 7th. He scored an unearned run when Gene Alley reached fIrst on an error by reliever Wayne Simpson.
Steve Blass (2-1) got the win. Starter Pedro Borbon (0-1) took the loss.
Game 3 on Sunday features Nelson Briles (1-0) vs Jack Billingham (0-4).

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates scored the first 3 runs of the game. They held off the Astros to snap a 6 game losing streak with a 3-2 win.
Roberto Clemente was 0-3. He still needs 103 hits to get to 3,000. Clemente did reach on an error in the 1st and got a lead off walk in the 7th.
Dave Cash scored the Bucs' 1st run (unearned) in the 1st on a sacrifice fly. Rennie Stennett drove in 2 runs in the 2nd with a triple. Stennett, starting in left field, has 8 RBI's so far.
The Astros scored a solo run in the 6th off winner Dock Ellis (2-1) and a solo run in the 7th off of Bruce Kison SV-1). Jerry Reuss took the loss (2-1).
The Pirates finish their 2nd homestand of the 1972 season with a 2-6 record. They'll begin an 8 game road trip on Friday against the Reds and will also visit Atlanta and Houston.

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates avoided their 6th straight loss due to a rain out.
Monday's game was delayed 57 minutes due to rain.
Clemente was 3-5 with his first home run of the year and his 1st 3 RBI's of the year on Monday. He needs 103 hits to get to 3,000.
Tuesday's game has not been rescheduled. On Wednesday, its Jerry Reuss vs Dock Ellis. Both were scheduled to start Game 2.

PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente's 2 run homer in the 6th tied the ballgame. But it wasn't enough as Houston handed the Pirates their 6th straight loss, 9-8.
Clemente was 3-5 with his first home run of the year and his 1st 3 RBI's of the year. He now needs 103 hits to get to 3,000.
The Pirates squandered a 3-0 lead. Clemente drove in the game's 1st run in the 1st inning when Rennie Stennett scored when Clemente grounded into a double play. They added 2 more runs in the 4th on RBI single's by Gene Clines and Gene Alley.
In the top of the 5th, starter Steve Blass gave up a grand slam to Jim Wynn to give Houston a 4-3 lead. Johnny Edwards hit a 3 run shot in the 6th to make it 7-3 Astros. The Pirates tied it in the home half of the 6th when Cesar Cedeno misplayed Dave Cash's single, allowing Alley to score. Cash scored on Stennett's RBI single and Stennett scored on Clemente's game tying homer.
Back to back to back singles off of Dave Guisti allowed the Astros to take a 9-7 lead in the top of the 9th. Clemente led off with a double in the bottom frame and scored on Al Oliver's single but the Bucs came up 1 run short.
The game was delayed 57 minutes due to rain.
Tuesday, the Pirates host the Astros for Game 2. Jerry Reuss vs Dock Ellis.
The Pirates are in 3rd place in the NL East, 4.5 games behind Montreal, Philadelphia and the Mets.

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates blew a 3-0 lead when the Reds tied the game in the 7th, took took the lead in the top of the 9th and held off the Pirates, 5-4. Cincinnati took the series 2-1.
Roberto Clemente singled in the 8th but was stranded at third when Richie Hebner grounded out to end the inning. Clemente needs 108 hits to reach 3,000. He's currently hitting .256.
The Pirates took a 2 run lead in the 3rd on Rennie Stennett's 2 run homer. The Pirates 2nd baseman is hitting .429.
Reds ss Dave Concepcion hit a lead off homer off Bruce Kison in the 7th to tie the game at 3 each.
The Reds took the lead with a 2 run 9th off of Dave Guisti (0-1). In the bottom of the 9th, Al Oliver led off with a double off WP Clay Carroll (1-0), scored when PH Willie Stargell grounded out but came up 1 runs short.
The Pirates will host a weekend series vs Atlanta. Pat Jarvis vs Bob Moose in Game 1.

CLEMENTE'S LEADOFF BB SCORES IN HEBNER'S GW HR. PIRATES BEAT REDS 5-2
Tuesday, April 25, 1972
PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente went 0-5 but led off the top of the 13th inning with a walk by his former teammate Joe Gibbon. He and Manny Sanguillen scored when Richie Hebner won the game with a two out, three run homer to give the Pirates a 5-2 victory over the Reds.
Clemente still needs 110 hits to reach 3,000.
The Pirates led 2-1 in the top of the 4th when Johnny Bench took starter Bob Johnson for a solo homer, his first of the season. The game remained tied until Hebner's game winning clout, his 2nd of the year.
Bob Miller (1-1) won in relief. Jim McGlothen (0-2) took the loss.
Game 2 of the 3 game series will have Gary Nolan face Steve Blass.

DAVALILLO 10TH INNING HOMER DOWNS PHILS IN 10, 3-2
PH CLEMENTE INTENTIONALLY WALKED
PHILADELPHIA - Roberto Clemente was given the night off, save for a pinch hit role in the top of the ninth. He was intentionally walked by Chris Short.
Clemente's replacement in right field, Vic Davalillo, broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 10th to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Phillies. Ramon Hernandez, the Bucs fourth pitcher of the night, retired the side in the bottom of the 10th.
The Phils took a 2-0 lead on solo homers by Tim McCarver and Don Money. The Pirates got a run back in the 3rd. Steve Blass led off with a double and was driven in by Al Oliver. The Pirates then tied it up in the 9th when Gene Alley doubled home Manny Sanguillen. Clemente pinch hit for Bob Miller and was intentionally walked by Short to face Dave Cash. Cash flied out to left to end the inning.
Clemente still has 113 hits remaining to get to 3,000 hits. Tomorrow night, Bob Moose vs former Pirate Woodie Fryman.
