ASTROS SNEAK BY PIRATES 9-8
6TH STRAIGHT LOSS
CLEMENTE 3-5
Monday, May 1st, 1972
PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente's 2 run homer in the 6th tied the ballgame. But it wasn't enough as Houston handed the Pirates their 6th straight loss, 9-8.
Clemente was 3-5 with his first home run of the year and his 1st 3 RBI's of the year. He now needs 103 hits to get to 3,000.
The Pirates squandered a 3-0 lead. Clemente drove in the game's 1st run in the 1st inning when Rennie Stennett scored when Clemente grounded into a double play. They added 2 more runs in the 4th on RBI single's by Gene Clines and Gene Alley.
In the top of the 5th, starter Steve Blass gave up a grand slam to Jim Wynn to give Houston a 4-3 lead. Johnny Edwards hit a 3 run shot in the 6th to make it 7-3 Astros. The Pirates tied it in the home half of the 6th when Cesar Cedeno misplayed Dave Cash's single, allowing Alley to score. Cash scored on Stennett's RBI single and Stennett scored on Clemente's game tying homer.
Back to back to back singles off of Dave Guisti allowed the Astros to take a 9-7 lead in the top of the 9th. Clemente led off with a double in the bottom frame and scored on Al Oliver's single but the Bucs came up 1 run short.
The game was delayed 57 minutes due to rain.
Tuesday, the Pirates host the Astros for Game 2. Jerry Reuss vs Dock Ellis.
The Pirates are in 3rd place in the NL East, 4.5 games behind Montreal, Philadelphia and the Mets.

Dear Ms. Pygian: I recently began dating a gorgeous woman. She’s way out of my league, but my geeky CMU pals don’t seem to be shocked. This fact, plus her incredible knowledge and understanding of all things scientific (in addition, she’s never missed a “Jeopardy” question), has me wondering if I’m the victim of a sophisticated practical joke. Many of my buds are involved in robotic research at CMU! I guess what I’m asking is, “How can I be sure that my new girlfriend, Dee Dee Creepio, is…well…human?” Signed: Philo Phrisbee

On a good day, the 320 crew members, 33 animators and 41 shooting units could produce about six seconds of stop-motion film for the new Aardman Studios Claymation-style movie The Pirates! Band of Misfits. No wonder, when you figure in creating 112 animated characters and massive sets – the pirate boat, alone, weighed almost 800 lbs. – it took five years to complete this charming cinematic treat. The movie revolves around the Pirate Captain’s (yep, that’s the main character’s name) quest to win the coveted Pirate of the Year Trophy. The Pirate Captain is likeable but loopy…kind of like, oh, say, a popular contemporary actor, who is bedding one of the most beautiful women in the universe, but for some reason decides to pay a sleazy street prostitute $60 bucks to perform a sex act on him in his car, and then gets arrested by the LAPD. And speaking of Hugh Grant, he’s the perfect choice to voice the film’s hero.
How inept is the jolly Pirate Captain? Well, his wanted poster boasts a reward of 12 doubloons and a free pen! And if that answer puts a smile on your face, this is the movie for you. Follow Captain and his zany crew from Blood Island (so named because it’s the shape of blood????) to Victorian England. Along the way meet Charles Darwin, Queen Victoria (she hates pirates), Jane Austen, the Elephant Man, Polly the Parrot?, a card-communicating monkey, sea monsters, ghost ships, leper ships, nudist ships, carnivorous world leaders and the thank you, thank you very much Pirate King. This silly but sophisticated flick is a PG-rated crowd-pleaser the whole family will enjoy. Froggy and I were so smitten we saw it twice. Stop-motion films have come a long way since the original King Kong. I’ll take Aardman over Pixar any day!

NUN BASHING
Last week the Vatican announced that it was finally going to crackdown on American nuns. Most of them belong to the "Leadership Conference of Women Religious"....there are almost sixty thousand of them. They were accused of falling prey to "radical feminism" and failing to speak out against homosexuality and contraception. I always had a hunch that the nuns were the big problem in the church....what with all their caring for the sick, and reaching out to the poor, helping the disenfranchised...who do they think they are? Jesus? Why the last time I marched in the streets to protest the war in Iraq there was actually a group of Catholic nuns marching right beside me...you'd think they were actually feeling blessed as peacemakers or something. The Vatican has it's hands full with these women...and their social justice ideas, especially
when it's still dealing with things like pedophilia, bishops with kids, problems with that pesky IRS stuff, and the very IDEA that a person without male sex organs would think they were worthy of the priesthood.
As far as "speaking out more about homosexuality", the community of nuns in this country through their many outreach programs are too busy taking care of the victims of hatred, abuse, and discrimination...often CAUSED by men of the cloth.
Just because these women go about their daily lives quietly helping the least of us, it doesn't mean that they aren't a real problem for the guys in the fancy dresses and pretty hats in Rome...they've been found out !
Years ago we went to a funeral in West Virginia..in a Catholic church for a friend who had died of AIDS. I had my seat belt on for the homily..wondering if we'd hear the usual gay bashing that is all so common. The priest however spoke about the time when he visited Mother Theresa's AIDS hospice in New York and told her that he didn't know how to deal with or even how to think about the whole issue, especially in the gay community. Her response was to lead him up and down the wards and hug each and every one of the patients. Then she said to him .... "That's how you deal with it".
Perhaps many of the nuns in this country are just a little too busy doing things that really matter..while the American bishops and the guys in Rome are on the wrong road...with the wrong priorities, and could learn a lot from the Little Sisters of the Poor when they're out begging for food on Saturday morning.

No inner Mel Kipper Jr. to channel here or nor analysis of collegiate prospects.
Just a strict assessment of draft priorities based on what the Steelers need, which isn't to say that the Steelers should draft based on need.
